No longer pointless

Official announcement: The Oberon Interactive Futsal team is no longer pointless. For the full story, read this, this and this.

The third half led to a great discovery: Vedett a great Belgian beer. I quite like their website too. You can upload your photos and become a Vedett yourself - you can get a customized crate. What a cool idea. I know the Postbank had personalized ATM cards years ago, but we are talking beer now. Beer is so much better than ATM cards.

I think the good result of the Oberon interactive Futsal team means we should do a photoshoot and get ourselves a crate of Vedett Futsal beer.

I recently came across NextStop.com, a SF based startup that is active in the field of user generated travel guides. They are still Alpha and they still need to run the Web 2.0 logo generator but they are probably waiting until they are in Beta to get the nice Beta thing under the logo that comes standard with the logo generator.

If design has not been their first priority, ease of use has. So far this is the easiest web 2.0 service I have come accross to make your own personal travel guide of the cities you love - or find guides made by other people of the cities they have come to know well.

In order to use the service you need an invitation, currently. But the good news is, I have some. Mail me if you want to give it a spin.

The next generation of smartphones?

Usually when we're talking about Nokia and patents, a mention of Qualcomm can't be far behind. This time however, we're looking at something entirely less boring, fascinating even: ultra-sound sensors that detect hand gestures in the air in front of the device. Now the stretch. Nokia's chief designer, Alastair Curtis, was asked at a recent cocktail party why Nokia's N-series of multimedia devices have yet to see a multi-touch interface, Curtis replied, "We've not launched what we think is right for N-series in a touch product. You'll see in the coming months, years... what we feel is right." Curtis then elaborated, "Much as I'm talking to you now with gestures." Hmm. Ok Alastair, if such devices are in the chute, as long as they don't resemble the Palm V-series... we're cool.

We won't bore you with more creative domino fields (you just have to go and check them out yourself). We just want to share some nice 3D viewer Les Kleuver has made for the E-Domino fields.

Autumn in Ireland

To promote Ireland in Autumn we created the campaign herfstinierland.nl - an interactive map, based on the Google maps API, that takes the concept of an interactive map one level higher. It's rich in content, it looks good, and it has a hotel booking engine integrated into it. So go have a look at it - better still, first have a look and then book a trip to compare it with reality.

And because I'm so much into the whole e-domino thing, I tried to create the logo or Tourism Ireland in domino. I suck at it, like you see. Luckily there are guys making much nicer stuff (but no Ireland logo's as yet, so if you're better than I am, please have a crack at it and send me your version.)

Domino E-Day

That the Dutch are fond of falling dominoes should not be a surprise. From the last 10 record attempts for the most falling tiles there were 8 in the Netherlands.

For non-profit organisation Diabetes Fonds we created a platform to do this attempt online at Domino E-Day. This viral is part of the cross-medial campaign by LemonScentedTea to let people know about the domino-effect of the diabetes disease.

Draw and dance

When I was a kid I wanted to make a movie about E.T. Together with Robert and Chris, two friends who were almost as good as I was in drawing E.T., we set out to make an animated movie. It was a dream to see my drawings come to life, to see my E.T. dancing on the screen. We never got very far - but we lacked the tools, too.

So I was very happy to see that we made dansen.kidszine.nl, a flash site for Kidszine where you can make a drawing and see your drawing come to life immediately. I tried my hand at creating E.T. again, like in the old days, but I seem to have lost my touch.

Luckily we have Peter-Paul who drew Sara Kroos and his excellency Ernst Hirsch-Ballin and made them do a funny dance together. I am sure Hirsch-Ballin never moved so well in real life.

Oberon Awards

When did your extra work, brilliant idea or nifty solution get appreciated when the jury of the Spinawards didn't. Well it never got, or at least, on the record.

This year Hans-Peter and Les started the Oberon Awards. Not only to fill the appreciation gap, but mainly to encourage all of us to go just that little further. Everyone at Oberon could nominate colleagues for extraordinary work in the main categories: Playful, Challenging and Explorative.

The awards ceremony was a bit like the one at ADCN, only our host was more fun (thanks, Hilco). I managed to get my hands on the Playful award with the MT and Angelique for the Oberoff campaign. It's a real honor to finally win a prize, even though it isn't a spider ring or a light bulb.

Wii goes Hema

We're big fans of Nintendo Wii at Oberon. The first Oberon Baseball Wii tournament was held back in December 2007, on the day the Wii was first available in the Netherlands.

Today, this Youtube movie about Warioland Shakeit made us laugh.

And we're pretty sure the game will make us enjoy ourselves as well. The Wario Land Shake it website surely did.

My favorite Irishman

The Irish were voted last year as Most friendly people living on planet Earth. So it is hardly surprising that Dutch TV channel RTL sent three ladies to Ireland to try and find that special someone they had been dreaming of all their lives.

Since RTL can only send three ladies, we decided to help the other 7,999,997 ladies in the Netherlands. So we created an online campaign where you can create your own ideal Irishman. And with a bit of luck he will invite you to come and visit Ireland.

Well, to be perfectly honest: you win a trip to Ireland. The Irish guy you make doesn't exist, or to be more concrete: his nose exists, his eyes, and so does the rest, but they're not together in one face.

Even if you're not looking for a special someone, or maybe you are, but you are looking for a female companion, you'll find that it is a lot of fun to mess with people's heads.

Kipinilo schijnt een plaats in Florence te zijn. Of een vorm van Martial Arts, of een restaurant in Vlissingen. Google maar raak.

Wat het echt is, weet ook Google niet. Maar wij wel. Het is een opdracht van een Middelbare school: leer kinderen hoe Google werkt. Een leuke opdracht. Iedereen maakt een pagina over het nieuwe woord Kipinilo. En wie uiteindelijk het hoogst staat is de winnaar.

Pluim voor de leraar die dat bedacht heeft, hij wint een Kipinilo. Mag hij thuis op de schoorsteenmantel zetten.

My television acted all weird the other day, somehow it picked up a signal straight from the USA giving me a glimpse of the first episode of the second season for the Root of all evil. The episode was about who is the most evil, Bloggers or some other guys.

Oberon in iPhone application development

When the first iPhone was released in the US it didn't take long for us to get our hands on one of those fancy devices. At the time of the official release in the Netherlands most of us already had a jail-broken US version.

iPhones running the new firmware have the App Store to download native applications. Using the official SDK developers can build official iPhone Apps that run natively on the iPhone. Still using a first gen iPhone, I had to wait for the Dev Team to release the new jail-break to be able to play with the all the new Apps.

This week I could finally update my iPhone and tried some of the new Apps. One of the cooler new additions is Shazam; this applications scans music played (i.e. on the radio or in a club) and finds the title and artist of the song. With direct links to the iTunes Music Store I could have a catchy tune I hear somewhere added to my library in just a few moments.

More interesting is what Oberon can do with this new platform. We've been diving into the SDK and that seemed to be okay. Although Objective-C isn't as smooth as C#, we started working on our first official iPhone App. This application will be quite simple and is in the line of what we've done before, but I'm sure we will use iPhone development for more interesting stuff in the near future. We already have loads of nice ideas.

We will keep you informed about our iPhone Apps.

Oberon dives into Silverlight development

Our developers at Oberon dived into the development of Silverlight applications.

Silverlight is Microsoft's anwser to Flash. Of course according to Microsoft it's much more. They write:

Microsoft® Silverlight^TM is a cross-browser, cross-platform, and cross-device plug-in for delivering the next generation of media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web.

It is more indeed. We find it to be more like a replacement for AJAX than it is for Flash.

We have created a couple of internal applications already. These are our main findings:
- Silverlight seems to do especially well in the video department.
- In pure animating power Flash still wins
- Creating and handling forms is a lot easier in Silverlight than it is in Flash. Not as easy as in plain html/javascript but you can make it look a lot better in Silverlight.
Next time we create an application like the Monteverdi Music Quiz it will be done in Silverlight.

So there I was enjoying a nice game of scramble on facebook when I noticed this neat little banner.

Ofcourse if you really try, you won't be able to find a site with a similar banner.
The thing that I noticed about this one though is that it says that it's not a joke. And apperantly i'm visitor number Five billion hundred and sixty four million four hundred sixty six thousand one hundred and twenty seven.

That's quite allot of exposure for a little green banner. I also wonder how they picked that number to be a winner. Personally, I would've picked 4.815.162.342

Robeco en AD Sportwereld organiseerden samen het EK beleggen, een slim en elegant concept: handel in aandelen van de landen die meedoen aan het EK. Op de slotdag betaalt het aandeel van het winnende land 100 uit. Alle andere aandelen zijn niets waard. Eigenlijk is het natuurlijk ons concept: voor Euro2000 hebben we precies hetzelfde spel voor Philips gedaan.

Maar wij zijn de lulligste niet. Het blijft een leuk idee (ook al is het gepikt) en dus doen we mee. En als we mee doen, doen we het goed. Zie hier de eindstand van de teams:

European Championship soccer in the Alps.

I'm not a big soccer expert and I always wondered if there are any rules conceirning the field soccer players play on except for the 'obvious' 2 dimensional measurements. When I learned that Austria and Switzerland where hosting the European Championship this year this is kindof what you would expect from their soccer fields.. The only thing i'm missing is snow and some sort of transportation up the mountain.

Last Saturday we played in the SDL Tridion Partner Softball Tournament. Although we are not (yet) a Tridion partner, we were invited to join last-minute when one of the attending teams cancelled. This picture resembles our result as we became 'Slapend derde' (third). With some training of our managing director Hans-Peter and myself, who both play Baseball at Quick Amsterdam, Oberon employees seemed to be really talented in Softball. We would like to thank SDL Tridion again for this great event! Hopefully we will be invited next year.

Vanaf vanochtend is de nieuwe oberon-site is in de lucht en dat is niet het enige dat nieuw is. We hebben alles veranderd, onze naam, ons logo, onze uitstraling. Omdat wij veranderd zijn. We zijn een interactief bureau en geen medialab, dus willen we ook Oberon Interactive heten en een logo hebben dat uitstraalt wie we zijn en wat we doen.

De nieuwe site is als het Internet zelf: een doolhof waar je kunt verdwalen, waar je onverwachte dingen tegenkomt, soms grappig, soms inspirerend, soms flauw. Kom ons dus ontdekken. Philips heeft een mooie EK game laten ontwikkelen: EK tafelvoetbal. Het duurde even voor ik doorhad dat je met toetsenbord speelde. Gelukkig was de Artificial Intelligence van mijn computertegenstander zodanig dat mijn Kroatische vrienden met 2-0 voorkwamen tegen de inferieur spelende Oostenrijkers zonder dat ik mijn poppetjes bewoog.

Dus heb ik mijn spelers de rest van het toernooi rust gegeven en toegekeken hoe we de ene na de andere wedstrijd wonnen, zonder ooit een stap te verzetten. 5-1 in de finale tegen Nederland. Vier eigen goals van van der Sar die daarmee topscorer is geworden van het toernooi.

De meeste mensen reageren dat ze een USB stick waarover gepiest is, niet in hun computer stoppen, maar bij Oberon weten we dat een USB stick best tegen een stootje kan. Gewoon doen dus. Hij staat vooral mooi in een MacBook.

SIRE campagnes kunnen wel degelijk effectief zijn. Dat blijkt uit een onderzoek van TNS NIPO. We zijn blij dat hebben kunnen meewerken aan de online uitingen van de campagne. Helaas is niet bekend hoeveel mensen online met de uiting in aanraking zijn gekomen. Voor wie het gemist heeft:

Even dacht ik dat Paul Curtis was langs geweest of dat ze eindelijk mijn aanvraag voor een Smart parkeer plek hadden goedgekeurd.

Misschien moet ik toch maar eens mijn smartje gaan inruilen voor zo'n nieuwe Smart mhd (dat ding is ook ideaal voor mensen die hun auto vaak laten afslaan.)
